The Land F/X Detail system is intended for the user to save their construction details into, to utilize the capability of an advanced filing and search capability, and automatic handling of callouts and schedule references.
Details can be saved as Standard Details or Component Details.

Component Details are those where several details together describe a physical object, or Component. These may include complex multi-detail items such as decks, trellis, signage, or standard items such as planting details that have a very unique situation. Rather than scatter these details across the CSI numbering system, and having to decide which section is more applicable to a complicated object involving many materials, Component Details allow a more simplified filing structure. Component Details are often specific to a certain project, but can quickly be accessed for a future project that has similar needs, without needing to recall the exact project the details were created for.

Regardless of whether you intend to save a detail as a Standard or Component Detail, you must first insert a Detail Template to indicate the extent of the detail.

The Detail Size and Scale dialog box will appear. The Detail Sizes are on the left, and the detail scales are on the right. Read more about the module size in Detail Module Size.

From the Detail Size and Scale dialog box the End User can, on the fly, pick various detail sizes and scales until they find the best fit for the assembly they wish to detail.
For the following example, the handrail from a bridge assembly is tall and narrow, so the 1B detail size would be a logical size first choice. Select the 1B detail size and try the 3”=12” detail scale to see how that fits the assembly. Selecting OK results in an outline of the detail at the crosshairs, as shown below. It is quickly evident that this scale is not inclusive enough. Right Clicking will bring you back to the Detail Size and Scale dialog box, select the next scale down, or 1½”=12”. The outline of the detail area is again present at the crosshairs, but this time is larger reflecting the new scale factor.
When the detail template is inserted, the Insert Template feature automatically performs the following functions:
Once the module has been inserted, the user can load layers, insert text, hatch, leaders, detail components, or other finishes to the detail in order to prepare it to be saved.

Standard Details are saved to a folder within the Land F/X directory structure at LandFX/Details/Standard. This allows all office staff access to the details in an organized and systematic manner. The details are saved with a detail number called a Detail File Number.
Land F/X saves and retrieves details within a Detail Categories file system. This system is based upon the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) MasterFormatTM 32 division classification of construction components
The CSI classification system is designed for individual construction components. As details are made up of a variety of construction components, some alteration of the CSI system was necessary to reflect the detail filing requirements.
The Detail File Number that is assigned to a detail that is being saved is based upon an eight-ten digit system.
This results in a Detail File Number that has a clearly defined CSI Section Number, then the Category with the detail number in that category. For instance, the detail for a turf rotor head would entail:
32 (Exterior Improvements) 84 (Irrigation) 03 (Irrigation Heads) . 16 (Turf Rotor Heads) – xx (number within subcategory).
or 32 8403.16-01 (for detail number 01 in this subcategory).
This detail file system allows for a large number of details to be saved in any one specific category. In the above example, the file system allows for 99 potential details that are just turf rotors.
When selecting Save a Standard Detail the Detail Category dialog box will appear to determine where to file the detail.

The Detail Category dialog box lists the Division, Subdivision, Category, and SubCategory for detail files. When you select a Division, the related Subdivisions will be indicated in the Subdivision column. Selecting a Subdivision will display the related Categories in that column.
In the bridge guardrail detail example above, select Division 06 – Wood, Subdivision 30 – Site Carpentry, Category 33 – Pedestrian Bridge, and SubCategory 23 – Bridge Guardrail.
The Detail Grouping in the bottom left corner is an advanced additional top-level grouping that is generally only used by extremely large companies with thousands of details and only a handful of highly specialized projects. In this fashion, they can still file their details by a standard detail number, but can have two additional levels of hierarchy above the standard detail number, for instance, adding BEIJ-WALK above a series a details, indicating they are all for the Beijing Olympic garden, the Walkway feature.

With the subcategory 23 Bridge Guardrail highlighted, enter the detail number, located near the bottom right corner at the Detail Number: box, and click on Select. The Detail Info dialog box will appear to allow you to fill in the title that will go in the detail, and other notes and information.
The management of the detail categories is done with the Land F/X Data Manager. You can also print a complete list of detail categories from there.
In order to select a detail number, you may need to browse through the details that have previously been saved in this category. Select Browse before deciding on a detail number and view any previously saved details. See Browse and View below.

This will be the Detail File Number, and is unique to this detail only. It is grayed out because the process to save the detail has established this number, and the End User cannot change it with this dialog box.
The Detail File Number is how the detail is saved, in this case 063033.23-10.dwg. The Standard Details are located in the directory LandFX/Details/Standard. The Detail File Number will also be displayed at the lower right hand corner of the detail.
This will be the detail title displayed on the detail. Enter this title as you want it to appear on the detail. In this example, the title will be BRIDGE GUARDRAIL.
This is a text field to be used as necessary to record any pertinent information the End User wishes to record about the detail. This field is entirely optional, yet can be useful to enter standard keywords, to facilitate searching the detail database at a later date.
If filled out, this is saved with the detail info.
Select Save after, at a minimum, filling in a detail title. The detail will be saved in the LandFX/Details/Standard folder and will be ready for use.
When you select OK, the detail is saved a dialog box will indicate:
The detail has been saved. You may discard the changes made to the current drawing.
The system has Wblock’ed out the contents of the detail boundary to the specified detail file. The can now move on to other details that may be in the current drawing, or discard the drawing entirely (although it is usually a good idea to file the source drawing in an appropriate place on the file server). If the user wishes to make further changes or revisions to this detail, you can either open the file manally, or use the Open detail capability of the Detail Manager or the Edit Detail button.
When you are saving a detail in the Detail Category dialog box, or using the Detail Manager, you may want to browse the details that have been previously created under a Category. As an example, select 04 Masonry, 22 Concrete Unit Masonry, and the Category 66 CMU Free Standing Wall Finished.

With the Category highlighted, select Browse to view the thumbnail library of details that have previously been saved in this category. This will aid you in deciding what category detail number to assign the detail being saved.

Within the Browse dialog box you can more closely view any specific detail by selecting the View button.

Component Details are those that relate to a complex component, where the grouping of the related details is more important than the CSI material structure. Alternately, the detail may just be clearly specific to a project, with no pressing justification to save it within the Standard Detail library. Component Details allow a simplified filing structure, and are saved to a folder within the Land F/X directory structure at LandFX/Details/Component.
As with Standard Details, the Component Details are saved with a Detail File Number, however, in a more simplified file system than Standard Details:
Components are the physical objects that the details are describing. These components are in turn filed into a relevant Category. For instance, a Category could simply be “Bridges.” Yet you may further delineate categories, with up to three levels of hierarchy. So, you could have “Bridges”, under which is “Wood Bridges” and “Metal Bridges”, and under Wood Bridges could be “Girder Bridges”, “Truss Bridges”, “Rigid Framed Bridges”, etc. Component Categories require a one to seven character code, that must begin with a letter.
The component is the physical object the detail is describing. While the name of the Component might be more generalized, such as “Pedestrian Footbridge,” the Component Code could be the project number the detail was originally created for, just a single letter or number, or some truncation of the title such as “PEDBRDG”.
One of the 32 CSI Section Numbers that apply to the detail. One component might be very complex and require a number of Divisions, such as a complex element that has 03 Concrete, 05 Metal, 06 Wood, etc. If the component will only have one or a handful of details, or if the detail is either comprised of many different materials or just an overall detail, you can just select division 01.
A two digit number to define the detail.
The result of this detail file system is that Component Details are grouped by their component category, then by their specific component, and finally are grouped together within a logical CSI Division and detail number. This detail file system will be especially appreciated as your firm develops greater numbers of Component Details.
For instance, the detail for a wood trellis framing for a project with the number 03.305 might entail:
TRELW (Wood Trellises) – 03.305 (Project Number) – 06 (Wood) 02 (second detail in component)
or TRELW-03.335-0602
When selecting Save a Component Detail, the Save Component Detail dialog box will appear, to allow you to specify its Component Detail number.

Highlight the component category that applies for this component. Ones that have sub-categories have plus (+) signs next to them. You can add a component category, sub-category, or sub-sub-category if necessary.
If you have already saved one of the other details for this Component, you can just select that Component. If this component has not yet been created, after selecting the appropriate Category, select New within the Componet area.

After selecting and/or adding categories and a component, the dialog box will display the relevant filing hierarchy for this detail.

Select a CSI Division that best fits the detail you are saving. This is not critical, but is helpful in organizing the details for a complex component. In this example select 06 Wood and Plastics.
Now enter a two digit detail number. If other details presently exist for this Component, the Browse button will be active. As an aid to selecting a Detail Number, you can select Browse to view the other details and their Detail Numbers that have been saved
Press Select after entering a detail number and the Detail Info dialog box will appear.

This is similar to the Standard Detail dialog box for saving a detail, in that the Detail File Number is displayed in a read-only fashion at the top, and the optional fields of Drawn by, and Notes are available if desired. At a minimum, fill out the detail title that you wish displayed on the detail. In this example, the title will be BRIDGE GUARDRAIL.
When you select OK, the detail is saved a dialog box will indicate:
The detail has been saved. You may discard the changes made to the current drawing.
Select Save, and the system will save everything within the Detail Boundary in the folder LandFX/Details/Component, as the selected Detail File Number. Further edits or revisions to the detail will have to be to that drawing. The current drawing can be discarded, but is usually good idea to file in an appropriate place on the file server, or even archive into that detail’s History.
