Land F/X Training : Irrigation

Irrigation

Preferences

Watch the video on selecting your preferences for irrigation symbols.

Do This:

§
Open the drawing Irrigation Symbols in the LandFX/Administration folder. It’s best to print each layout tab of this drawing for a hard copy. Review the families of symbols for spray heads, the rotor symbols, and the equipment.
§
Go to the Irrigation Preferences to review how to select a valve callout type, change spray head family symbols, adjust head and equipment scales.

Adding Irrigation Components to a Project

Watch the video on adding irrigation spray heads, rotor heads, valves, and auxiliary equipment to a project.

Do This:

Source Data and Pipe Data

Watch the video on reviewing the Source Data and Pipe Data that will effect the calculations of the irrigation system. Read the Topic.

Do This:

§
Open your existing project or start a new one. Go to the source data and set up several types of points of connections to see what different sizes of water meters, with different safe flows, etc., effect the available flow (you can have up to 99 different P.O.C.’s).
§
Go to pipe data to view the different options for types of lateral and mainline pipe, and the data slider options that control the how the pipes are sized.

Placing Heads into the Drawing

Watch the video on placing spray and rotor heads into a drawing.

Do This:

§
Open the drawing 1.01 Base Drawing. Open your project, or a project such as Tutorial 1 which has some irrigation equipment in it.
§
For the soccer field, place a rectangular grid in the area as an aid to laying out the heads, at a 50’ spacing.

Circuiting the System

Watch the video on circuiting the irrigation heads into zones for each valve.

Do This:

§
Open the drawing 3.01 Heads. Use the Circuit function get a Flow Total of the project, and click to place this somewhere in the drawing. It does not really matter where in the drawing you place it, as this is for your use only.
§
Go to the Circuit function and check a head type you wish to circuit, it will ignore all others. Click Add New to add a new circuit zone for this type of head. Draw a polyline around a head area, and right click when you are done.
§
Open the drawing 3.02 Zones to view a typical circuited and zoned plan.

Inserting a Point of Connection, Control Valves, and laying out the Mainline

Watch the video on placing a P.O.C. (point of connection), quick couplers, remote control valves, and connecting them with a mainline layout.

Do This:

§
Open the drawing 3.02 Zones, turn off the layer LI-HEAD-ZONE, and place the point of connection (P.O.C.) and the backflow device with the place auxiliary equipment function.
§
Place some quick couplers around the project.
§
Place some remote control valves where they may go to feed a group of heads. You may wish to turn back on the layer LI-HEAD-ZONE to see the grouping of heads. Save this drawing as desired for further sessions.

Drawing Lateral Line Pipe

Watch the video on drawing lateral line to spray and rotor heads, and using error checking to see if all heads are connected to a valve.

Do This:

§
Open the drawing 3.02 Zones, or the drawing you saved from the previous session. Turn off the LI-HEAD-ZONE and the LI-PIPE-MAIN-NPLT layers and draw lateral pipe between a group of heads, and connect to a valve.
§
Use the Highlight Station function while piping heads to see if the heads are indeed correctly connected. Absolutely use this function after piping to a valve to see if all of the heads that you think are connected to the valve are, in fact, connected correctly.
§
Open the drawing 3.03 Verify Piping and select the Verify Laterals function. The heads not connected to a valve are circled in yellow. Pipe those heads to a system and run the function again. Save this drawing as desired for further sessions.

Sizing Lateral Line Pipe

Watch the video on pipe lateral pipe sizing criteria and sizing the lateral pipe.

Do This:

§
Open the drawing 3.03 Verify Piping, or the drawing you saved from the previous session.
§
Review the Pipe Data options for this project.
§
Click on the Size Lateral function and use the pickbox to select a valve. Enter elevation information if you wish (which will increase the pressure requirements for elevation changes), or simply leave those as “0”.
§

Cleaning up the Labels

Watch the video on cleaning up the labeling of the pipes.

Do This:

§
Select the Delete Pipe Label function to delete a label and its related lasso leader.
§
Select Pipe Label to add a pipe label to a piece of pipe that has no label.

Valve Callouts

Watch the video on labeling remote control valves with valve callouts.

Do This:

§
On the above drawing select Valve Callout and callout a valve, giving it a valve number as you wish.

Remember: You can always select equipment edit

Revisions and Editing

Watch the video on making revisions, moving and deleting equipment, and reviewing the options to equipment and making replacements.

Do This:

§

Drawing Mainline Pipe

Watch the video on drawing mainline pipe, using error checking to see if all equipment is properly connected to the mainline, and to insert pipe sleeves. Read the Topic.

Do This:

Sizing the Mainline

Watch the video on mainline pipe sizing criteria, sizing the pipe, and seeing the effects of variations of the pressure and water velocity. Read the Topic.

Do This:

Irrigation Schedule

Watch the video on how to create an Irrigation Schedule, options for the schedule, and how to refer details to the schedule. Read the Topic.
