Land F/X Videos
The Land F/X detail functions allow the End User to create and file details in a logical and systematic manner. A wide variety of Detail Graphics are available for quickly creating and building details. Detail insertion is assisted with the Land F/X detail file system, and details can be automatically associated with Schedule Items and Reference Notes.
The volume and complexity of details makes the Land F/X organizational database and detail builder an invaluable tool.
In This Section
The Land F/X Detail system is intended for the user to save their construction details into, to utilize the capability of an advanced filing and search capability, and automatic handling of callouts and schedule references.
Details can be saved as Standard Details or Component Details.
Regardless of whether you intend to save a detail as a Standard or Component Detail, you must first insert a Detail Template to indicate the extent of the detail.

| The Detail Size and Scale dialog box. |
From the Detail Size and Scale dialog box the End User can, on the fly, pick various detail sizes and scales until they find the best fit for the assembly they wish to detail.
For the following example, the handrail from a bridge assembly is tall and narrow, so the 1B detail size would be a logical size first choice. Select the 1B detail size and try the 3”=1’- 0” detail scale to see how that fits the assembly. Selecting OK results in an outline of the detail at the crosshairs, as shown below.
| Selecting a 1B detail size and 3”=12” scale results in a detail boundary that is too small for the desired detail assembly area. | |
It is quickly evident that this scale is not inclusive enough. Right Clicking will bring you back to the Detail Size and Scale dialog box, select the next scale down, or 1½”=1’- 0”. The outline of the detail area is again present at the crosshairs, but this time is larger reflecting the new scale factor.
| Selecting a 1B detail size and1½”=1’- 0” scale results in a detail boundary that is appropriate for the desired detail assembly area. | |
When you have the size that you want, simply click to place the Detail. The Finished product will look like the image below.
| Click on the location you wish to insert the detail template, area and the border is drawn along with the detail title and detail number placeholders. | |
When the detail template is inserted, the Insert Template feature automatically performs the following functions:

Standard Detail File System and Detail File Numbers
Standard Details are saved to a folder within the Land F/X directory structure at LandFX/Details/Standard. This allows all office staff access to the details in an organized and systematic manner. The details are saved with a detail number called a Detail File Number.
Land F/X saves and retrieves details within a Detail Categories file system. This system is based upon the 2004 Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) MasterFormatTM 48 division classification of construction components.
The CSI classification system is designed for individual construction components. As details are made up of a variety of construction components, some alteration of the CSI system was necessary to reflect the detail filing requirements.
The Detail File Number that is assigned to a detail that is being saved is based upon an eight-ten digit system.
| Division | Subdivision | Category | Subcategory | Detail Number |
| 2 numbers | 2 numbers | 2 numbers | 2 numbers (optional) | 2 numbers |
This results in a Detail File Number that has a clearly defined CSI Section Number, then the Category with the detail number in that category. For instance, the detail for a turf rotor head would entail:
32 (Exterior Improvements) 84 (Irrigation) 03 (Irrigation Heads) . 16 (Turf Rotor Heads) – xx (number within subcategory).
or 32 8403.16-01 (for detail number 01 in this subcategory).
This detail file system allows for a large number of details to be saved in any one specific category. In the above example, the file system allows for 99 potential details that are just turf rotors.

If there are multiple details on the page, when choosing Save Standard Detail, you will get a prompt to “Select Boundary of Detail to save”
When selecting Save a Standard Detail the Detail Category dialog box will appear to determine where to file the detail.

| Detail Category dialog box |
The Detail Category dialog box lists the Division, Subdivision, Category, and Sub Category for detail files. When you select a Division, the related Subdivisions will be indicated in the Subdivision column. Selecting a Subdivision will display the related Categories in that column.
In the bridge guardrail detail example above, select Division 06 – Wood, Subdivision 30 – Site Carpentry, Category 33 – Pedestrian Bridge, and SubCategory 23 – Bridge Guardrail.
The Detail Grouping in the bottom left corner is an advanced additional top-level grouping that is generally only used by extremely large companies with thousands of details and only a handful of highly specialized projects. In this fashion, they can still file their details by a standard detail number, but can have two additional levels of hierarchy above the standard detail number, for instance, adding BEIJ-WALK above a series a details, indicating they are all for the Beijing Olympic garden, the Walkway feature.

The Detail Info dialog box will appear to allow you to fill in the title that will go in the detail, and other notes and information.
Note: The management of the detail categories is done with the Land F/X Preferences. You can also print a complete list of detail categories from there.
In order to select a detail number, you may need to browse through the details that have previously been saved in this category. Select Browse before deciding on a detail number and view any previously saved details. See below.

Detail File:
This will be the Detail File Number, and is unique to this detail only. It is grayed out because the process to save the detail has established this number, and the End User cannot change it with this dialog box.
The Detail File Number is how the detail is saved, in this case 063033.23-02.dwg. The Standard Details are located in the directory LandFX/Details/Standard. The Detail File Number will also be displayed at the lower right hand corner of the detail.
Title:
This will be the detail title displayed on the detail. Enter this title as you want it to appear on the detail. In this example, the title will be BRIDGE GUARDRAIL.
Description/Notes:
This is a text field to be used as necessary to record any pertinent information the End User wishes to record about the detail. This field is entirely optional, yet can be useful to enter standard keywords, to facilitate searching the detail database at a later date.
File Date, Drawn by, Checked by:
If filled out, this is saved with the detail info.
Save:
Select Save after, at a minimum, filling in a detail title. The detail will be saved in the LandFX/Details/Standard folder and will be ready for use.
When you select OK, the detail is saved a dialog box will indicate:
The detail has been saved. You may discard the changes made to the current drawing.
The system has Wblock’ed out the contents of the detail boundary to the specified detail file. The can now move on to other details that may be in the current drawing, or discard the drawing entirely (although it is usually a good idea to file the source drawing in an appropriate place on the file server). If the user wishes to make further changes or revisions to this detail, you can either open the file manally, or use the Open detail capability of the Detail Manager or the Edit Detail button.
Browse and View
When you are saving a detail in the Detail Category dialog box, or using the Detail Manager, you may want to browse the details that have been previously created under a Category. As an example, select 04 Masonry, 22 Concrete Unit Masonry, and the Category 66 CMU Free Standing Wall Finished.

Component Details are those that relate to a complex component, where the grouping of the related details is more important than the CSI material structure. Alternately, the detail may just be clearly specific to a project, with no pressing justification to save it within the Standard Detail library. Component Details allow a simplified filing structure, and are saved to a folder within the Land F/X directory structure at LandFX/Details/Component.
As with Standard Details, the Component Details are saved with a Detail File Number, however, in a more simplified file system than Standard Details:
| Component Category | - | Component | - | Division | Detail Number |
Component Category
Components are the physical objects that the details are describing. These components are in turn filed into a relevant Category. For instance, a Category could simply be “Bridges.” Yet you may further delineate categories, with up to three levels of hierarchy. So, you could have “Bridges”, under which is “Wood Bridges” and “Metal Bridges”, and under Wood Bridges could be “Girder Bridges”, “Truss Bridges”, “Rigid Framed Bridges”, etc. Component Categories require a one to seven character code, that must begin with a letter.
Component
The component is the physical object the detail is describing. While the name of the Component might be more generalized, such as “Pedestrian Footbridge,” the Component Code could be the project number the detail was originally created for, just a single letter or number, or some truncation of the title such as “PEDBRDG”.
Division
One of the 2004 Construction Specification Institute (CSI) Section Numbers that apply to the detail. One component might be very complex and require a number of Divisions, such as a complex element that has 03 Concrete, 05 Metal, 06 Wood, etc. If the component will only have one or a handful of details, or if the detail is either comprised of many different materials or just an overall detail, you can just select division 01.
Detail Number
A two digit number to define the detail.
The result of this detail file system is that Component Details are grouped by their component category, then by their specific component, and finally are grouped together within a logical CSI Division and detail number. This detail file system will be especially appreciated as your firm develops greater numbers of Component Details.
For instance, the detail for a wood trellis framing for a project with the number 03.305 might entail:
TRELW (Wood Trellises) – 03.305 (Project Number) – 06 (Wood) 02 (second detail in component)
or TRELW-03.335-0602

This is similar to the Standard Detail dialog box for saving a detail, in that the Detail File Number is displayed in a read-only fashion at the top, and the optional fields of Drawn by, and Notes are available if desired. At a minimum, fill out the detail title that you wish displayed on the detail. In this example, the title will be BRIDGE GUARDRAIL.
When you select OK, the detail is saved a dialog box will indicate:
The detail has been saved. You may discard the changes made to the current drawing.
Select Save, and the system will save everything within the Detail Boundary in the folder LandFX/Details/Component, as the selected Detail File Number. Further edits or revisions to the detail will have to be to that drawing. The current drawing can be discarded, but is usually good idea to file in an appropriate place on the file server, or even archive into that detail’s History.

Detail Graphics provide a convenient access to blocks of individual pieces of elements and components used in creating and finishing a detail. These would include bolts and connectors, irrigation equipment, masonry blocks, precast concrete components, wood and metal framing members, door and window sections, etc.
The list of Detail Graphics is so wide ranging that the real intent of the Land F/X Detail Graphics is to allow a convenient process for the End User to add detail component blocks to the file system, and make those blocks immediately available through the Land F/X Detail Component system.

Use a Detail Callout Placeholder when you want to quickly define where details will be needed, while associating a detail with them at a later time. This is useful if you are not sure if the detail exists in the Standard or Component Detail libraries, or if you want a graphic reminder of what details you will need to develop.
Inserting Detail Placeholders is a similar process to the Detail Callout procedure, except that you do not have to associate a detail with the placeholder at the time of insertion.
Select the type of detail callout you wish, either Section, Arrow, or Circle (as defined in Callout above), and insert the placeholder. The Detail Placeholder symbol is different from a Detail Callout in that is dashed, to identify it as a placeholder.
Detail Placeholder sequence. | Finished Detail Placeholder callout. The “Associate Callout” function will have to be used to associate details to the placeholders at a later date. |
Detail Callouts can be of two types:
Detail Callout is used to refer to a specific detail that has already been added to the Detail Manager, or that you know exists as a Standard or Component Detail.
Detail Placeholder is used to signify that a detail will be associated with this callout at a future date.
Step 1 – Select Insert Detail Callout
| |

(If Flash is installed and JavaScript is activated, you can watch a video inside this web page.) |
|
When you select Detail Callout the options for the callout will appear.

The Detail Options are:
Detail Section which will create a section line at the location of the component to be detailed.
Detail Arrow will point with an arrow to the component to be detailed.
Detail Circle will encircle the component to be detailed.
Section Flag allows pointing along a section line.
Section Double provides an alternate method of pointing along a section line.
Plain option allows inserting a callout with no arrow option at all.
Include detail title: when this box is checked, the title of the detail will be printed alongside the callout.
For example, select Detail Section. The command line will ask:
Start detail cut.
Select point 1 on the drawing to define the start of the detail cut flag. The command line will ask:
End detail cut.
Select point 2 on the drawing to define the end of the detail cut flag.
Select point 3 which will define where the horizontal leader line will occur.
Select point 4 which will be the start of the detail callout circle.
Detail Callout sequence. | Finished callout. |
F Remember:
§ The first callout leader line will be inline with the two points you just entered, so some care should be taken that you are satisfied with the angle of the two points you selected.
§ The detail cut flag (or two thick lines on each side of the leader line, to signify where the detail is being taken) will occur between the first two points above. Some care should be taken that you are satisfied with the length of the detail cut flag.
The detail callout is now associated with the detail selected. Notice that the callout bubble appears blank. This is because you have not yet placed the detail into the drawing, so Land F/X does not yet know the sheet and detail number to indicate this detail. When you place the detail into the drawing, no matter what sheet it is on, simply update the detail callouts and this information will automatically be filled in.
If the detail you were associating with this callout had already been placed into any drawing of the project, then the detail callout would have had the sheet number and detail number automatically filled in.
Detail Arrow simply puts an arrow point at the first selection click, and Detail Circle simply asks for the center and outer edge of a circle before placing the callout.
Examples of the three different types of Detail Callout leaders, Section, Arrow, and Circle.
Step 2 – Associate a detail with the callout.
When you insert a Detail Callout, the Detail Manager for that project will appear. This will indicate any details you have previously selected for the project. You can either click on one of the existing details added to the project, thus associating it with the callout, or add a Standard or Component Detail to the project if necessary.

After selecting OK, the callout will be associated with this detail.

|
You are able to place detail callouts within a Component Detail. This is useful to have one overall detail, that then references the other details in the component. As the detail references can not be assigned until the details are saved, there are two general ways to accomplish this:
§ Insert a Detail Callout Placeholder into the detail while initially defining it; then after saving all the details for the Component, use the Edit Detail button to click on the detail File Number to edit the finalized detail. You can now Associate the Placeholder Callouts to become Detail Callouts and save the changes to the detail.
Land F/X inserts details into Paper Space much like schedules and notes. This greatly speeds up the detail insertion and display process.

The User may have a standard Detail sheet template that has an existing non-plot grid into which details can be placed. Land F/X offers a Detail Sheet Template function that will draw an appropriate grid on the fly, of any rectangular shape.
You will be prompted for the Upper Left Window of the sheet template. After clicking at that location, move the curser towards the lower right corner of the sheet template. The template will be viewed as you move the curser, indicating the size and number of detail modules, with the maximum possible detail modules spaced evenly through the area.
Click the location of the lower right corner when you are satisfied with the sheet template layout.
Click points 1 and 2 to define the sheet template area. | The number and size of the detail modules will change as you move your curser from point 1 to point 2. Click the lower right corner when you are satisfied with the template layout. |
F Remember:
§ The Detail Sheet Template is drawn with layer Z-DETL-NPLT, and is a non-plot layer so you can turn it off after use, or leave it on and it will not show up on a plot
§ After drawing the Detail Sheet Template, it will act as a block so you can grab and move it to a final position if you wish.

Important! You may only place details onto a single layout tab within each drawing. Land F/X will associate the DWG with the sheet, so you are limited to having details only placed on a single paperspace tab within each drawing.
With a Sheet Template available as a guide, insert the details that have been added to the project, but have not yet been inserted into a sheet.
Open the Detail Manager and select a detail to insert. The first time you insert a detail into a drawing, you will have to indicate what sheet number that drawing is, so the database can keep track of what detail and sheet number each detail is.
Filling in the Sheet number and title on the Select Current Sheet dialog box. You must fill in a sheet number, but it is not necessary to fill in the Sheet Title.
When you select OK you will be prompted for the detail number:
Prompting for the Detail Number.
The system will automatically suggest the next available number. You can assign any detail number you wish, and the system will verify that there are no other details on the current sheet with the specified number in use.
The outline of the detail module size of the detail you are inserting will appear at the cross hairs, with the insertion point at the lower left corner. Move the detail to the lower left corner of the appropriate Detail Sheet Template module where you want the detail to appear,
The AutoCAD Object Snap is automatically turned on when inserting a detail, with the snap set to Intersection. In this way, you will be consistent in where you insert your details. The Object Snap will then automatically be turned off after detail insertion.
The detail is inserted and automatically scaled to fit into Paper Space. Any callouts in the current drawing that are referencing that detail will be filled out with the correct number and sheet number.
Now the project database will automatically relate this detail to the location and sheet number you placed it. This location will be referenced to the Planting and Irrigation Schedules, Reference Notes, or detail callout within any other drawing of the project. If you should delete the detail and place it at another location on this sheet or any other sheet, the new location will automatically be the new detail indication.
F Remember:
§ You can freely move details as required after you place them.
§ If you numbered a detail wrong, or want to change the order of detail placement, delete and re-insert the details as required. The Detail Manager will reflect any changes in numbering or order that you make.
§ If you want a detail on a completely different sheet, delete the detail and go to the other sheet drawing and place it there. The Schedules, Notes, and Callouts will automatically reflect any changes to numbering or sheet placement that you make.
§ If you need to change the number of a sheet, simply do that from the Project Manager, and all references to placed details will now reflect the revised sheet number.

The first detail you select for a plant in a plant group, such as Trees, should be the most common detail for the group, and will be the default detail for that group. As the default detail, this detail will automatically be associated with all of the plants in that group. This is because, more often than not, most of the details for a plant group will be the same detail. After adding the first detail, or the default detail, select Edit to add a different detail for each plant that has a different detail than the default detail.
Selecting the Default Detail button will bring up a dialog box for the plant group that was selected. In this case, the group Trees was selected, and the detail dialog box displays details for Tree Planting.

The upper left corner of this dialog box displays the sub-categories for the detail group Tree Planting. The detail numbers and titles for the highlighted category are listed on the bottom left, and a thumbnail of the details is indicted on the right. Select any detail and click on View, and an enlarged image of the detail will be visible.
When you highlight a detail and select OK from the detail dialog box, that detail will now be the default detail representing all trees in the project. If some of the trees require a different detail, highlight that tree and select |Edit, and associate a different detail as required.
Select the appropriate default detail and specific details as required for the trees, shrubs, and ground covers. These details are now stored with the project and are ready for placement into a drawing with the Detail Manager.
F Remember:
§ At any time you can replace the default detail for a plant group with another detail by selecting Default Detail from the Project Plant Manager. This does not change the details for plants that where associated with specific details other than the default detail.
§ After you have assigned a default detail to a plant group, you may add more plants to the group By Name or By Project. These new plants will automatically be assigned the default detail.

Reference Notes are a powerful tool for managing notations that reference to text descriptions. They also allow an easy ability to specify a detail, with a more textual representation of the condition, than utilizing a Detail Callout would allow.
Select the Detail button to open the Detail Manager. If no details have been added to the project, the Detail Manager will be blank. Select either a detail you have already added to the project, or select a Standard Detail or a Component Detail to add to the project and associate with this Reference Note.
After placing the detail, you can select to include the Detail column on the Reference Note Schedule, having it automatically appear next to the corresponding note.

Even though the Land F/X detail system is built around adding and placing details one at at time, you can create a standard detail sheet rather easily. The process would be as follows:
§ Create a temporary project, or use an existing project with its details
§ Assemble the desired details in the Detail Manager, and place them into a drawing
§ Save the project as a Template in the Project Files screen, and save the DWG into an appropriate location as a Detail Sheet Master
§ When ready to use the detail sheet on a new project, base the project’s Sheets and Details on the template, to bring in the details with their sheet references
§ Open the Detail Sheet Master DWG that has the placed details in it, and save it into the new project’s folder
§ You will also need to associate this DWG with the new project from the Project Files screen
§ You may very well need to change the sheet number, which can easily be done from the Project Manager screen

To print the details created with Land F/X, or to just print all the details come with it, you can use the Print Details function. You need to have a blank drawing open, and after clicking Print Details, the Page Setup dialog box will appear. You will need to select an appropriate printer, CTB file, and specify an 8½ x 11 Portrait layout – if you do not have such a layout selected when you click Ok, you will be notified that you need to do so.
Once you have selected your Portrait Letter layout settings, the Print Details dialog box will appear:
Print Details dialog box.
You have four options to select which details to print:
§ All by Date: This option will print both Standard and Component details, saved on or after the date specified; the next time you Print Details, this date will default to the last date you printed all details.
§ Standard by Division: This will print only Standard details, within the selected division. Note that the list of divisions only displays the divisions that have details within them.
§ Component by Category: This will let you select any single Component detail Category, to print all details within it.
§ All Details: This will print the entire detail library, both Standard and Component, and reset the Details Last Printed date to today’s date.
