is there a way other than a work area to add up a specific lines or object lengths or areas that might be scattered around a plan, I understand that I can use ref notes if everything is on the same layer and i can use work areas if they are all in a similar area but sometimes we just need to add fences in a certain area up.. we had a lisp routine on ACAD but that no longer works. often it is just a one off calc in a preliminary or a question from a contractor that does not require an elaborate set up just a point and click type of solution. With all the great features maybe i have just over looked this simple feature?

thanks again.

Our Length Total and Area Total will do this, but only for all objects on a certain layer.
So at worst you would need to isolate the layer, select the desired objects, and move them to a different layer. That would be the same about of work to select just them anyway, so might as well move them to a unique layer to speed any work with them in the future.

Hi Bob,

The refnotes lengths options adds up lengths on the same layer, like you said. They also work with work areas. Keep in mind that work areas will only include a polyline as being inside them if a majority of the points are inside the bounds of the work area. Then, if a majority are, it will include the entire line length.

So, if you have some lines crossing work areas, make sure that you put a break somewhere at the crossings so that each section is entirely within the work area. The system cannot calculate the section of a joined polyline inside and outside of a work area.
