The city of Morgan Hill CA commented on my landscape planting plan:
"Rhamnus Frangula ‘SMNRFBT’ (Fine Line Improved Buckthorn) – does not show up on WUCOLS, need to find alternative

a. Update the common name for Arbutus ‘Marina’ to state Maruna Arbutus
b. Update the water use and scientific name for Parkinsonia X ‘Desert Museum’ to state Very Low and Parkinsonia x ‘Desert Museum’ (Cercidium)
c. Update the common name for Ceanothus ‘Julia Phelps’ to Julia Phelps Ceanothus
d. Update the common name for Dodonaea Viscosa ‘Purpurea’ to state Purple Hopseed Bush
e. Update the common name for Pittosprum Tobira to state Mock Orange
f. Update the common name for Muhlenbergia Capillaris ‘Pink Gold’ to state Pink Cloud Hairy Awn Muhly

I utilize Land F/X and don't pay much attention to the common names of plants. Obviously, the city of Morgan Hills thinks that it is important
While a massive project for Land F/X, it would sure be useful for plant data to include the WUCOLS region and water use as an option

Hi Thomas,
Thank you for your post. I see the city of Morgan Hill wants the specific, exact common name listed in WUCOLS for each plant.
We follow a specific format for our common names, picking one well-known common name for the entire species and applying that to each entry. For entries with cultivars, such as Achillea x 'Moonshine' we include first the cultivar name, then the species common name, making the common name "Moonshine Yarrow" - something like "Fern Leaf Yarrow" is far less descriptive in my opinion than Moonshine Yarrow for that cultivar, and does not bring up the cultivar itself in a basic internet search. For another example, I believe the common name we include for Pittosporum tobira of "Japanese Pittosporum" is actually much more descriptive than "Mock Orange" which is a common name used for multiple plants (ex: Philadelphus lewisii, notably also a species included in WUCOLS).
I am not going to update the common names for these plants to what they list, in this case, because I believe our common names are generally pretty good. I will verify that we do have acceptable names for each of the entries on this list though.
I suggest you change the common names manually to what they are requesting for these entries, since they are so specific. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I will say that we are working on adding more common name options and are in the process of entering more common name data for future release.
We also have WUCOLS info on the radar to add, and the request is noted, I appreciate you brining it to our attention! One option in the meantime, if you often work in the same WUCOLS region, is to add the info as a custom field. You can do this via the "edit custom fields" button in the bottom left of the plant data screen. Add the field via the portal, then it will be available for editing in each plant. This way the water use info will always be correct for the group. I have attached an example.
