long story short, I'd like to all at once transfer the most current project data from my server at work to my server on my home computer. Which files do I copy and overwrite to make that happen? I'd love to avoid restoring projects from backups one by one.

thanks

Alden, Thanks

Unfortunately, the two servers have been operating in parallel for a lot of years. I use LogMeIn to sync data across the two computers, but I don't want to accidentally overwrite the one complete project data with the partial on the home computer. I'm trying to carefully, smartly bring the two in line so I can start a regular sync process. So I was thinking I'd like to be pretty specific about copying and pasting known good project data to overwrite the one I want to zap. The solution you gave me may overwrite other files in the wrong direction. Is there a short list of files that hold just project data?

This may be what I should do. I was just concerned that I might have more current files in Landfx at home. But probably not....the two files you pointed two are dated with an unrealistically early date, and are only about 9kb. nonetheless, after I copied the originals at home in a different location, I overwrote with the ones from work, closed CAD and restarted....no changes in the projects list at home. I still have the older, smaller projects list at home.

Thanks for looking at this...I was just trying to repeat something i had done in the long ago

ah HA...yes okay...the sql server. so, here's another question. I have been presuming that details are simply CAD drawings in the sense that if they are saved, and copied from one server to the other (in this case i just sync the server\landfx\details folders), that as long as the 'project' knows they exist and to look for them in the details folder that they will update/place/find the correct detail drawing to refer to. My point being that as long as I restore a current project, and my server\landfx\details files are identical, there should be no confusion in producing a drawing at home or at work. However the reverse is also true is it not? That if i DONT sync the server\details files in the landfx folder, my personal drawings will update with the details that are stored on the current server in use. yes?
To clarify a couple things:
First, the data in the MySQL database is actually stored in the very large ibdata file, not in the two .frm files.

Next, you definitely should synchronize these two installations to reduce this headache. Especially since you are adding Details to the mix. You can use our Project Backup and Restore tool to move the project data back and forth, but then you would also need to check the option for the Details, and then Import the details, but then worry about if a detail on one installation was more up to date... ack!

So, let's address the Detail problem first -- do you use Dropbox or anything like that? Simply move your detail folder to there.

Then, our new Cloud data can take care of the rest. We are in the last phases of testing that, but if you use the Tech Support feature to request moving to Cloud data, Alden can get you squared away with it -- probably early next week.

Right...you see my problem Jeremiah. So first...yes i need to tidy. In general, I am focused on only one project at a time, and am disciplined about backing up the project when I finish at one location, and restoring it in the other before adding work at the 2nd location. I don't generally need to have the entire project list current, but I would like to tidy things up and so started this conversation.

Second, the advantage to LogMeIn is that it evaluates modification date. So if you sync files to update the contents, it will copy both directions files that don't exist in the other, and then overwrite files of the same name with the newest modification date (after asking you if you agree). A fine thing if you are anal about managing saves as I have learned to be. So...if I am attentive, I can (and do) sync just the server\landfx\details folder as I move back and forth from home to ensure that the when I "update details" in my active CAD file, the source files are identical at home and at work. (i was hoping to use this function on the project root files in the landfx folder, but it sounds like the MySQL won't recognize that simple of a data sync) My understanding is that the work of the landfx project as far as details is concerned, is keeping track of which detail is on what page and called out from others. That in essence, except for the thumbnail that is generated for placement, LandFX doesn't care what the saved CAD detail file looks like, only that it is associated with a file in the details folder, and that it also evaluates modification dates to recognize when the detail has been updated from the one that is currently placed (when the 'update details' function is used). So that is how I've been managing travelling back and forth. It is actually the same as the 'back-up details' part of the back-up process, but more complete and 'one-step'. Provided everything i just said about LandFX management of details is actually true and not just the wrong end of the stick.

Now about dropbox...that could work. I assume there is something in preferences that can redirect the details manager to a different folder?

Finally, I am for all these reasons VERY interested in a simplified cloud server, for project and detail storage. It will be great to hear more about it. My only limitation is slow-ish data speeds at home. But if a person opened a project off the cloud regardless of location, and managed details from the cloud with an on-site backup for each...that would be a fine thing.
So to clarify, are you just using LogMeIn to sync the files, or are you using it to remotely operate the other computer?
In terms of sync'ing the Detail folder, it would be doing the same thing as using Dropbox or any similar service.
And yes, the setting for the Detail Library is set from the Preferences screen.
