When that happens to me (and it's usually like 2' of pipe somewhere in a huge drawing where I probably double clicked real fast at some point) I just select the layer the pipe is on (lateral or main layers - usually it's a chunk of lateral pipe though) and copy/paste the whole layer off to the side the drawing against a blank area of my cad background. I run a black CAD background, so it's really easy to see a snippet of different color pipe - my eye goes right to it. Then I pick off the errant pipe piece(s) in the real drawing and then I select all my copied lines and delete those.
It's a lot easier to see this way in a huge drawing than trying to find it among other line work - the lateral remnants show up magenta. Saves a lot of zooming, panning and eyestrain.
