I use Dropbox as my cloud server, but repeatedly I have issues where my entire Detail Library just vanishes. There are three of us that use Dropbox remotely and I know that the pathing can be switched by one user so it affects the other two. We have been meticulously careful in pathing and still this issue happens.

My real question is this - Should I keep trying to fix Dropbox (which works well in lots of other ways and I am generally happy with it) or try to move my business cloud 'server' to another platform that might work better with LFX? It would be a big headache to move everything, but so is this loss of time and productivity with missing detail library.

Thanks for any insight you have to offer.

Dawn,

Before switching to another provider, which may well have the same issue, let’s get a clearer understanding of the issue.

First, all three stations are able to access this same detail library, and if one user saves a new detail, the others can access it momentarily, correct?

But occasionally, I’m guessing your Index.xml file disappears, and is replaced with a “Index (Conflict).xml”, or something like that?  And to resolve, you need to either rename that or the bak file to Index.xml, and then it’s all better?

One fix, is to appoint just one person in charge of creating detail categories and project folders. Even in the cases where worker #2 or #3 needs a new folder, they could just send an instant message to #1, who could create it for them.

But it’s also possible I’m on the completely wrong track, and it’s a different issue you are experiencing.

Jeremiah,

Thanks for responding. It's not just a momentary lag, it's more like one user can use the detail library just fine, then another user cannot see the entire detail library. When trying to re-path it, I'm always a little concerned that we will accidentally copy over the whole thing with nothing (when the question pops up: do you want to move your detail library to this location). We wrestle with it a while, then get it fixed - then the next time I go to use it, it's completely gone again. Only the standard LFX details are available.

On and off for two years now. I thought it was because the path might look different i.e. C:\Users\Different User Names\Dropbox\LandFX versus L:\LandFX so we've been focused on that, and we've been trying to address it operationally. We all know how to simply re-path the Detail Folder, so we do that when we think that's the issue. We think we get it fixed, then it becomes a problem again. So now, I am wondering if that's really the issue. Details placed long ago, simply can't be loaded, images missing (from details) too. I keep thinking it's simple, but it keeps happening.

Hope that helps,

Dawn,

It certainly sounds like the only issue here is a simple matter of configuration. You should never need to change the details library location once it is set correctly.

if your entire Landfx folder is located in your Dropbox location, and you want to keep your detail library within the Details sub-folder, then actually all you need to do is to actually blank out the detail library path completely.

To do so, open the install.xml file located in the Landfx folder with Notepad. You’ll see the detail library path — simply erase the path, leaving the markers.

Then on all 3 computers, they should be able to access the detail library without issue.

Ahhh if only that were true! We will try to isolate the problem and see if that helps.

Thanks for your help,
