My irrigation valve callouts now have a color fill in the background of the numbers. I don't believe we have ever changed our preferences. We have the latest updates and I looked in the Knowledge Base section on editing valve callouts but did not see anything regarding color fill. Have I missed something?
Here is documentation regarding the new color fill: https://www.landfx.com/kb/details-graphics-issues/text/item/4680-masks.html

I'll look into getting that easier to find when searching.

But in short, we've added a background mask to all of our callouts. You can always turn the layer off for a quick fix, but the best long term fix is to just make sure that color number plots at 0% in your CTB.

This is something our firm did on our own with the old irrigation blocks. Instead of masking, we drew in WIPEOUT on all our irrigation blocks. We've also created a background halo to the sizing text so that the text pops out especially on drawings that are 20 or 40 scale. it greatly clarifies your callouts and equipment.
