I got a new PC recently, and had to reload SketchUp Pro, which I use all the time for 3D rendering. Primarily I use Toposhaper to take contours or points from CAD and create a 3D model. Honestly, Toposhaper is pretty much the ONLY extension I use. But combining that with LFX's 3D connection, I can work through design concepts so much faster.

I upgraded to SketchUp 2025, and it has been exceptionally buggy. I've spent hours with tech support to resolve issues.

I'm hearing that 2025 is not a very stable version, and that going back to 2023 is a good idea.

Anyone out there have recommendations about what version is best?

Hi David,

Sorry to hear SketchUp 2025 is acting buggy despite your having a new PC. They rebuilt their graphics engine starting with SketchUp 2024 and are likely still working out some of the kinks. It sounds like you may have already tried it, but in the SketchUp graphics settings, switching to the "classic graphics engine" may help. Otherwise you may have some luck running SketchUp in compatibility mode, or updating your graphics driver.

You could definitely hop back to SketchUp 2023. There are some new features introduced with 2024 (Performance improvements and ambient occlusion) and 2025 (PBR materials and environments), which you'll miss out on, but all the base functionality will be the same and it may very well be more stable for you.

The Land F/X SketchUp plugin in particular supports the 3 most recent versions of SketchUp (2023, 2024, 2025), so if our plugin is part of your workflow, I wouldn't recommend going with a version older than 2023.

It looks like the Toposhaper plugin supports 2023 as well.

PS: You may be interested in tuning into the webinar tomorrow morning - Jake and Jer will be showing off some exciting upcoming features of the Land F/X SketchUp plugin.

Thanks for all the information, Alex. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 3D Connection, and it has been very stable over the years.

I look forward to seeing the upcoming webinar. For me, SketchUp is a design tool, not a presentation tool. I use it to place my proposed LFX designs--usually small residential--into the existing terrain (in SketchUp). From there, I can see quickly how a concept works--or doesn't work. Going back and forth is easy and fast. For presentation, I make hand drawings.

Thanks again.
