Can I Open GIS SHP/SHX Files in F/X CAD?

Issue

You want to open GIS data files in F/X CAD.

A Geographic Information System (GIS) dataset typically consists of several file types, and may include DBF, CPG, SHP, QMD, SHX, and PRJ files. Each of these file types stores different components of spatial data related to a geographic location. For example, SHP files define the geometric shape of the site, PRJ files define the coordinate system used, and QMD files contain metadata about the dataset. All these files together provide the essential data needed to compile an accurate description of a geographic area in terms of shape, attributes, location, and coordinate system. Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD Map 3D can import some of these file types and use some of the data associated with them. These programs also have the ability to translate between various spherical coordinate systems.

Solution

Unfortunately, F/X CAD does not include AutoCAD Map tools and cannot import any of the above-mentioned GIS data file types or use the data they contained. Further, AutoCAD and F/X CAD are flat-plane systems, meaning they are unable to translate spherical decimal coordinate system (latitude and longitude) information directly into feet or meters on this flat plane.

Possible workarounds:

• Option 1: Use AutoCAD Map or Civil 3D instead.

• Option 2: Convert the dataset to a DXF file.

A GIS dataset, or a KML file used to create a dataset, can be opened in GIS software – you can download and use QGIS for free – and exported as a DXF file. You can then open this DXF file in AutoCAD or F/X CAD.

This file will give you the linework associated with a physical site. However, because of the inherent inability to translate from a spherical decimal coordinate system to a flat plane in this configuration, you will likely need to adjust the site's scale and location in space.

• Option 3: Request a DWG base file generated by a civil engineer in Civil 3D.

When requesting this file, ask the civil to set the geographic location of the site, site features, and reference files.
