PDF Xrefs and CAD – Fixing Draw Order Display Issues

Issue

Your drawing order isn't working exactly right when you try to bring a PDF file into your drawing as an Xref. For example, you may want the PDF to be in the "back" (i.e., below the other linework in your drawing) but it's not staying there.

Having other issues with PDF Xrefs, or looking for best practices?

  • Do your PDF Xrefs have frames or boundaries, and you don't want them to? Or do they not have frames and you want them to? If so, here's what to do.
  • Are you experiencing decreased drawing speed or performance after bringing in a PDF as an Xref, or are you just looking for some recommendations and best practices for bringing an image into your drawing? If so, see our:

Cause

While it might appear as if the objects you're drafting are falling behind the PDF, the draw order is actually correct. You likely just need to regenerate your drawing.

Solution

Type REGEN in the Command line and press Enter. The display will regenerate to the correct draw order, which points to how this issue is likely occurring because your graphics driver display is struggling with the size of the PDF.
