ActiveX Server Returned the Error: Unknown Name: HATCHSTYLE (Applying a Gradient or TrueColor to a Solid Hatch)

Issue

You received the following error message when attempting to apply a gradient or TrueColor to a solid hatch:

Active X server returned the error: unknown name: HATCHSTYLE

Cause

This error can result from:

  • An issue with the hatch polyline boundary
  • A problem with your drawing
  • A corrupt AutoCAD installation

Solution

1. Follow our steps to open a blank drawig and attempt to duplicate your issue. In that drawing, draw a perfect rectangle and try to place the same gradient within it.

Are you able to place the gradient in the blank drawing without getting the error?

  • Yes: The issue is most likely with either the hatch polyline in your original drawing, or with the original drawing itself. If so:
    • First, try redrawing the hatch polyline and placing the gradient. If you can do so without the error, you've solved the issue.
    • If you still get the error, follow our steps to clean your drawing. Still getting the error in your clean drawing? Move on to Step 2.
  • No, you still get the error in the blank drawing: Move on to Step 2.

2. (if necessary) Still getting the error in either a blank drawing or in the clean version of your original drawing? Follow our steps to reinstall/repair AutoCAD or F/X CAD.

The Reinstall option fixes issues with your CAD installation without removing your personal settings. Don't uninstall CAD completely – just select the Reinstall option.
