LABash is always on our list of the year’s most-anticipated events. This year's installation, the 50th-annual event, will be themed "Rise Above Run" – a motif that not only evokes Cornell's famed Libe Slope but also points to landscape architecture's potential to create spaces that address the many challenges faced by modern society, including environmental and social justice issues. It's always fun as landscape architecture students and educators join industry professionals in a celebration of learning, networking, and transcending through landscape design.

Land F/X University Rep and Usage Technician Amanda Berry is fired up to give her lunch-and-learn presentation at CELA 2019. Interested in attending? Sign up below!

Overview: Engaging Students in CAD Design Using Land F/X

Landscape architecture students will use a variety of software platforms over their careers. The industry is trending toward BIM, and this trend will inevitably continue as software continues to evolve. For landscape architecture, BIM means the use of specific tools and smart objects – as in placing "trees," "sprinklers," and "walls" rather than generic CAD blocks and lines.

Amanda Berry

Presented by Amanda Berry

Land F/X Usage Support

Land F/X has established itself as the premier BIM platform in the landscape architecture field, with more than half of all firms using it as an add-on to AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, and/or Revit. It proves equally valuable in an academic setting, where the use of smart, industry-specific software helps focus instruction on design principles and methodologies rather than mundane and archaic CAD commands. This presentation by Amanda Berry will demonstrate these capabilities and show why they are imperative tools for today's students and tomorrow's design professionals.

+

Landscape architecture enthusiasts from across the globe will take over California’s capital city for the 2019 Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA). Hosted by UC Davis, the annual gathering of more than 300 Council members has a theme of Engaged Scholarship this year. The conversation will center on "collaboration and dialogue between academic and community partners, and between communities." See the official CELA 2019 website for a list of scheduled events.

Our Land F/X University Rep and Usage Technician, Amanda Berry, will be on hand to join the conversation and give a lunch-and-learn presentation of her own!

+

If you design irrigation systems, you’ll want to be at the 2018 IA Show in Long Beach. This annual irrigation-centric event is all about networking, professional development, and immersion in the latest technologies, techniques, and innovations.

Not Your Father's AutoCAD: Bringing CAD Drafting into the Future of Landscape Architecture

If you're only drafting using the tools that come with AutoCAD, you're using a workflow from two decades ago. This session will introduce the essential tools that have evolved inside the Land F/X plugin for AutoCAD and SketchUp since then. Land F/X has evolved from a start-up established by a father and son in a garage into a widely used landscape architecture tool. Among its many features are a massive plant and site amenity database, ready-to-use symbols, colorization tools, and the ability to import a CAD drawing into a 3D model. All these features have been developed based on suggestions from landscape architects who use the software every day. Created based on the presenter's father's need for landscape architecture tools within AutoCAD, Land F/X speeds up the daily tasks of thousands of landscape architects worldwide.

Amanda Berry @ 4 p.m.

Rendering in AutoCAD and SketchUp with Land F/X

The best way to communicate your design intent to a client or the public is through colorful plan and 3D renderings. The level to which you take your renderings is only limited by the time you've budgeted to complete the task. This session will cover the tools Land F/X adds to AutoCAD and SketchUp to take renderings further within those programs in a few clicks. We'll show you how to spend less time creating a great rendering and, as a result, reduce your reliance on time-sucking post-production rendering software.

Are you stuck on how to travel to Maryland? Being far from Maryland is no excuse! I did the trek from Toronto to New Orleans one year. It's not too late firm up your travel plans. Here's how:

  • 1. Find your travel buddy. Traveling to conferences becomes cheaper and cheaper as the group going grows larger and larger. At the University of Guelph, we organized coach buses or several smaller van rentals to cut down on travel costs, which helped more people afford to go and reduced the cost even more! Sharing a hotel room also helps. Maybe a travel company in your area can help you organize your trip to find even more savings.
  • 2. Bump up the learning potential. For that Toronto to New Orleans LABash 2007 trip, we made a few stops along the way to Delaware Park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in Buffalo, and to Fallingwater in Pennsylvania by Frank Lloyd Wright.
  • 3. Ask your landscape architecture program to help fund the travel costs. If you're following suggestions 1 & 2 above, you might be meeting some requirements for department funding!
  • 4. Ask your professors to consider arranging project due dates to allow students to attend without missing a deadline. LABash is, after all, one of the best educational conferences LA students can attend!

See you there!

–Amanda

Booth #315

We'll be at the Irrigation Association (IA) show in Las Vegas this Wednesday and Thursday (December 7 and 8). Stop by and check out our booth!

We'll also be teaching some classes about the benefits of CAD-based irrigation design. IA has approved these classes for Continuing Education (CE) credits, meaning they count toward the educational units required to maintain your license.

Wednesday, Dec 7:

11 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Land F/X – "How CAD Has Changed Traditional Irrigation Design"

It's no secret that CAD drafting differs greatly from hand drafting. We will discuss the major developments that CAD has added to the design process. For example, designers now have access to add-ons for CAD that never would have been available with hand drafting. What other benefits and opportunities does AutoCAD offer? What improvements can the addition of a tool designed specifically to handle irrigation design bring to your CAD drafting process?

12 p.m. – 1 p.m.: Nelson Irrigation – "CAD Design of Ag Sprinkler and Drip Irrigation Systems"

1 p.m. – 2 p.m.: Land F/X – "Real-World Cases: Working Through the Life of a Project"

Join us as we go through real-world examples of projects completed both with and without the use of CAD. This open discussion will allow us to see the effects and importance that site revisions, contractor changes, new employees, equipment changes, and change orders can have in the design and drawing process.

2 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Land F/X – "Using Legible Symbols for Irrigation Design in CAD"

In this session, we'll discuss the importance of a legible plan. What elements should an irrigation design include? What practices make the most sense when it comes to the detail that will be included in the plan? How do you make the plan readable, and where should the detail to convey the design go? Symbols have a major role in this process; how does CAD influence your symbols (pros and cons)? How do you deal with pre-assigned data to all manufacturer equipment? What can CAD provide to simplify this entire process while still allowing you to be quick and efficient?

Thursday, Dec 8:

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Land F/X – "Start-to-Finish Irrigation Design in CAD"

*A limited number of lunches will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis.

This course will take you from the concept through the scheduling phases of a project. We will go into the benefits of having access to live manufacturer equipment data and show you how to read this data. We'll also help you develop an understanding of what equipment is available to you and what to think about when choosing the specific equipment for your design. Accuracy is essential, so we'll go over some layout processes that will help you proceed quickly through head layout and piping. We'll also show you how to read the data that is being fed into your design. Finally, we'll provide an overview of the tools available to you for sizing pipes and running schedules.

2 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Nelson Irrigation – "CAD Design of Ag Sprinkler and Drip Irrigation Systems"

Jeremiah and Krystal had a succesfull time in Melbourne, networking, meeting existing clients, and getting interviewed for an Irrigation Association video on YouTube.

Jeremiah and Amanda attended LABash in Columbus, Ohio, and got fired up for the future of landscape architecture. Many thanks go to the LABash 2016 organizing committee from The Ohio State University for putting on an excellent conference, with several amazing speakers. We spoke to many students who were already fexcited about Land F/X, and had fun showing off features to inspire everybody to learn more features to make academic life a little easier. We’re also looking forward to next year’s LABash at the University of Maryland, and we hope to see you all there too.

+

CELA confirmed for us that the level of research going on in landscape architecture today is truly inspiring. The 4-day event included a Lunch-and-Learn presentation by Amanda Berry titled "New Tools in Land F/X: Create More Time for Design." The presentation went great with several Professors and MLA students attending to learn how the program has changed and how to integrate it into their departments or offices.

Here at Land F/X, we want to be an avenue for the spread of ideas, as well as a hub of knowledge for the landscape architecture and irrigation design professions. With this, we plan to make more connections with academic researchers and continue featuring cutting-edge design ideas in our free webinars. We can be a portal between research and practice. We have the technology!

+

The ASLA Trade show is always a blast. It is a great place to meet people from all walks of life and through all gamuts of the industry. We met with several new manufacturers and had a great turnout at the booth. Not only consisting of our beloved existing clients who stopped by to say hi, but brand new faces interested to see what Land F/X had to offer! Being in Chicago was a special treat, to see the architecture of the buildings along with the great use of open space throughout the city. I think my favorite part (besides the trade show of course) was walking around downtown seeing the incredible integration of the pedestrian experience with the waterfront, old Chicago architecture and parks that quietly lay atop the subway system.

Great Scott!

ALSA Boston was fantastic. The show was a success as far as sales and connections. And we hosted a Masquerade Themed after party which was a huge hit. We explored the Freedom Trail a bit after the show as well and took in some great American history.
