Unique Lighting Systems
Our lighting equipment database now includes transformers and HUB housing units from Unique Lighting.

Unique Lighting's HUB installation method is designed to reduce maintenance and simplify troubleshooting by providing moisture protection and drastically decreasing the number of wire connections needed for a lighting system. The company's transformer line includes 150- and 300-watt models, as well as the higher-wattage I-Force and Direct Burial models. All are designed for easy installation. You can spec each of these products from the HUBs and Transformers sections of our Lighting Manager.

Something’s Awesome in the State of Denmark
An opinion by Jeremiah Farmer

This article from the CityLab website appears to take issue with greater Copenhagen’s plan to create 740 acres of offshore artificial islands. Unfortunately, the author implies that Copenhagen is mistaken in its pursuit of this ambitious 50-year development, despite its stated goals of achieving carbon neutrality and combatting rising sea levels.

In actuality, the proposal is nothing short of applaudable. We have seen airports built offshore – first in Tokyo and Hong Kong – then entire communities in Dubai and Bahrain. Compared with the smaller, more incremental methods undertaken in Manhattan and San Francisco, these developments are quite intriguing. As we naturally run out of space, how should we approach development on islands? This Copenhagen model is truly unique and, by design, is a comment on island development. It essentially sets a necessary precedent of carbon waste reduction and flood protection. It is, in my mind, the single best way to approach development, and I commend it.

It's too bad this author takes the basic tack of, "How dare you attempt anything ambitious until you have solved every other problem and made everybody perfectly happy.”

NEW Buckner Superior Product - Pressure Regulating Module

Buckner Superior
Pressure Regulating Module
Buckner Superior’s new PRS-MOD pressure-regulating module is an ideal addition to retrofits and new installations alike. Easily installed via threading into the solenoid port, the PRS-MOD adds flexibility to your specification of Superior Brand base valves by regulating outlet pressure at the valve. Compatible with Superior 950, 950DW, 950DWIB, 950SD, 1000, and 800 valves, it will regulate and maintain outlet pressure between 10 and 100 PSI in dial adjustments of 5 PSI within systems with up to 200 PSI of incoming pressure.

Note that the existing 950PRS, with its factory-installed, side-mounted pressure regulator, will retain its place within the Buckner Superior product line. The PRS-MOD is designed to add regulation to valves already installed in the field, or for installation with base Superior valves for regulation without the need for external tubing.

We’ve added PRS-MOD options to each compatible Superior valve series listed above. You can find them in the Valves > Remote Control Valves section of our Irrigation Manager.

Is it possible for humans to create something completely novel and new that is based on nothing that previously existed? Or is human creativity just rearranging and building on previous ideas?

Researchers, building on a Kurt Vonnegut theory, used computers to discover that there are only "six core trajectories which form the building blocks of complex narratives"*.

I'm not really sure what that really means, but I like making sounds with instruments that, I tell myself, no one has ever made before. It makes me feel better about the world.

Likes: Puppy breath, parallel universes, lazy days, all-you-can-eat sushi, koala bears eating things, silliness, old couples holding hands, last but not even least dogs.

Dislikes: Tomatoes, ghouls, sandals, people driving, wrinkled skin from too much time in water, pronouncing the word "rural."

Hobbies: Magnets, videography, movies, being awesome, extreme vacuuming.

When you are driving and see one shoe on the side of the road, what do you think happened to the other shoe? If we ponder this situation logically, we can deduce that the other shoe is either nearby or somewhere else entirely. However, we would be safe to assume that the other shoe does exist somewhere. Shoes are sold in pairs, so seeing one shoe makes us uneasy. Even if people are sans leg or legs, they have to buy their shoes in pairs. Unless they go on eBay, where one can procure a solitary shoe from various vendors. If you think about something, someone has probably thought of it before. There are no new ideas. Even the idea of no new ideas is not new. So, in a world with no new ideas, seeing a single shoe will, in most cases, elicit speculation on the second shoe's whereabouts. This speculation, however, will have been speculated before, and even speculation will not uncover any truths. If one wants the truth, then one would have to search out the missing shoe – an endeavor for which no one has time. However, we do have time for it. Why not? What is time? That is a whole other discussion, and I already forgot what I was talking about. Is anyone even reading this? What was the question again?

Webinar: A Practical Approach to Engineering the System (Low-Voltage Lighting)
Webinar: A Practical Approach to Engineering the System (Low-Voltage Lighting)
Presented by:  Brian Qualls of Unique Lighting Systems
September 17, 2018
10:00 a.m. Pacific Time

Many designers will only create a fixture placement plan when it comes to landscape lighting. Aimed at landscape architects and other designers, this webinar will show the engineering side of a low-voltage system. We'll move past the idea that "we are not electrical engineers" and show you how low-voltage lighting has the same design fundamentals as irrigation systems. Once you've viewed this presentation, you'll have a better understanding of how low-voltage lighting works and will no longer need to rely on “others” for a complete lighting system design.

Attention Cloud Data Users

As you may be aware, we experienced a brief Cloud Data outage on Monday, September 10, at approximately 9 a.m. The outage only lasted about 15 minutes, and no data was harmed or lost. We want to reassure you that outages of this sort are extremely rare – it was only the second over the past year, and both were minimal.

As with these past outages, you will be able to check either our website or our Twitter and Facebook accounts for status reports and estimated time to operating capability should any others occur in the future. Use the link below to learn more about Cloud outages – and why you don't need to worry about them.

From China to Columbia, 5 Cities That Made Their Streets Safer with Urban Design
In 2015, the global community pledged to halve the number of deaths and grave injuries caused by traffic accidents by 2020. Presently, more than 3,200 collision-related deaths occur every day. With the growing number of vehicles, that number could triple by 2030.

As is expected, cities with poorly designed streets have the highest rates of injuries and deaths. Click below to learn how five cities made their streets safer through the use of urban design.

Likes: DOGGOs!, computers and tech in general because NERD, whiskey, cars and motorcycles and all things automotive, concerts, games.

Dislikes: Doggos (when your doggo is dumb and hunts skunks and consequently gets sprayed by them all the time – it's a love/hate relationship), early mornings, hangovers, large crowds with itty bitty moving space, dumb drivers.

Hobbies: Racing (mainly for the adrenaline rush, but race fuel and burning rubber are a close 2nd), mechanics (taking something broken and rebuilding it is just too much fun), radio-control shenanigans (same reasoning as mechanics but in scale form! Also slightly cheaper ... sometimes), video games because who doesn't love blowing things up??

Is living life to the fullest possible? Anything is possible that you make possible, so that's up to the individual. I think living life to the fullest is having fun, no matter where you are or what you're doing. As long as you're having fun, you're living.

Likes: Existential abstraction, the ocean, weird time signatures, being outdoors, IPAs and sours, basic human kindness tempered by cruel humor.

Dislikes: Closed-mindedness, the Great Garbage Patch, obfuscation, people who can't laugh at themselves, rampant urban sprawl, the trending misuse of the word "literally."

Hobbies: Surfing, songwriting, building unusable musical instruments, self-deprecation, running, reaching out to embrace the random.

What benefits does art provide society? Does art hurt society in any way? Art has the potential to save the world, or at least get us through the day. At its best, it forces us to question our assumptions, which is immeasurably beneficial. Its worst is synonymous with the viewer/listener/interpreter's worst. Art does not inherently hurt society – co-option of art to promote an agenda hurts society.

Power Tip: Save Custom Hatches

Save Custom Hatches

Presented by: Damien Knight

Land F/X has a vast library of hatches for just about every possible design scenario. On the off chance that you have a hatch pattern we don’t, you can easily save it into our database. You'll then be able to scale your hatches, change their rotation, and place them on a predetermined layer.

In this Power Tip, we’ll show you the range of the existing hatch options, as well as how to save your custom hatches and create a preview slide for your hatch.
