Fatal Error
AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 With Land F/X

Fatal Error
AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 users who are running these versions with Land F/X appear to be experiencing a Fatal Error. If you see this error, you can correct the issue quickly by downloading and installing AutoCAD Service Pack 1 for 2017. See the link below for instructions.
Note that Service Pack 1 is built into F/X CAD installations, so F/X CAD users should not be seeing this error.

Updated Spot Elevation Tool

Quick Trick of the Week

Quick Trick image
We've recently overhauled our Spot Elevation tool, adding a new dialog box and allowing you to select from several elevation callout styles. Haven't used this tool yet? It's a great way to call out elevations throughout your plan. You can enter elevations manually, select an existing contour line to assign it with an elevation, and place elevation callouts relative to each other with the elevation calculated automatically. Want to control the decimal places in your automatic elevation callouts? You can do that too! See the link below.

Large Windows 10 updates appear to be interfering with AutoCAD and F/X CAD licensing, requiring reactivation. We apologize for this issue, and we know that Autodesk is working with Microsoft to for a long-term resolution. In the meantime, you can correct the problem quickly by activating your CAD installation. Claude Monet Impression Art Image
Impressionism
Inspired by: Forrestt Williams

Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s.

Originally the art world reacted strongly negative and this group of painters were not accepted. As an example Van Gough only sold a small amount of paintings during his lifetime for very little money. Before the Impressionists everything was literal and accurate - paintings of landscapes and bowls of fruit. They are often credited as influencing and paving the way for the larger abstract movements that followed in the 20th century.

With October comes the much-anticipated Land F/X University Tour! We're looking forward to another great year, with eight landscape architecture departments confirmed and ready. Is yours on the list?

This year, Amanda Berry will be touring around the USA to show students what the software can really do, and why they should start training with it before entering the workforce. I'm sure our professional users will agree that a solid "Proficient in Land F/X" on a résumé is a welcome sight!

Tinycards - American Leaf Identification

Take a Look at this

Tinycards American Leaf Identification Image
Recommended by another Landscape Architect friend who's moving to Germany, I'm now using Duolingo to learn another language and I love how easy they make it to learn! So of course I was really excited when I saw the email about their new app, Tinycards which is a flashcards for anything app.  I went looking and found what I was hoping to find: plant identification!
The app is new so it's only American Leaf Identification so far, but the power is in there to make your own study material for woody plant ID or LARE study questions. Share it around the profession to make us all better!

Disassociate a Land F/X Project from a Drawing Template (.dwt)

Quick Trick of the Week Image
If you've created an AutoCAD drawing template (.dwt file), it's important to not associate that template with a Land F/X project. That means not opening or creating a Land F/X project when creating and saving your drawing template. If your template has a Land F/X project assigned to it, you run the risk of accidentally using that project for multiple drawings.
Then if the project is deleted or its data changes, those changes will affect every drawing associated with that project. Already assigned a project to your drawing template, follow our steps to disassociate it.

Detail Enlargements

When building details, you'll often find yourself needing to provide a close-up view of a detail component that shows a more intricate and detailed view of that component.
One of the biggest challenges in creating these enlarged sections lies in maintaining the same dimensions between the main object in the detail and its close-up component. See how our Detail Enlargement tools make this process quick, foolproof, and downright fun.

We have been receiving a number of technical support issues from AutoCAD 2017 users, who have found it much easier to contact us than their Autodesk reseller.  The consistent issue we have found is a need to install the Service Pack 1, which addresses all the known issues.  Meanwhile, our F/X CAD 2017 has Service Pack 1 embedded within it, and it will be released on September 30.

Send Schedules to a Spreadsheet

Quick Tick of the Week Image
Did you know that most schedules you create with our software can be sent to a spreadsheet for further editing? By just selecting the Spreadsheet option when creating a schedule, you can export it to the spreadsheet program you have installed on your computer, such as MS Excel. This feature applies to Plant, Concept Plant, Irrigation, and Reference Notes schedules, as well as a number of other site schedules.
Of course, you're always free to place schedules in your drawing – but a spreadsheet can be a great medium for making changes and adding data such as costs. You can also share a spreadsheet with clients who don't have AutoCAD.

Summer is almost over, and many of our academic users have already started up the 2016–17 academic year.

With that comes a friendly reminder that a new year means a new Support ID. You won't be able to use the Support ID you received last year, or even the one you may have received during the summer for a summer extension academic license.

The fastest way to get your school's new Support ID is to fill out our Academic License Form again, using your official academic email address. You'll immediately be sent instructions on how to get your program back up and running!

Today's tip for new and returning academic users is to set up your automatic update reminders – and to update! We send out regular updates with new tools and other improvements all the time. One of the best ways to make sure you can write "proficient in Land F/X" confidently on your resumé is to ensure you're working with the latest version.

Check out our Checking for Updates Automatically documentation page for steps on how to turn this feature on. I recommend setting it to "Every Day" and "Any User." You'll only get notifications when a new update is available.

Cleanup Zoom Extents
Inspired by: The Land F/X Team

Aside from drawing cleanup, perhaps the most important step to take with a drawing you receive from a colleague, consultant, or client – or any drawing, for that matter – is to Zoom to Extents. You might be surprised at what you find. Zooming to the extents of your drawing can be a lifesaver if you’re trying to see your design’s overall site limits.
This step has an added benefit: It can help you find out whether your drawing includes rogue items hiding out in space that you can't see. Zooming to Extents in a drawing that includes these stowaways will often make it look as if your design has disappeared altogether. Make sure to go through and delete these errant objects and get back to your proper site limits. This handy little trick can save your sanity while helping you clean up your drawing.

Site Leaders: Multileaders and Background Masks
Quick Trick of the Week
We’ve added some new features to our Site leaders with text and multiline text. When you place a leader with text or MText, you’re now placing a multileader (MLeader) – a native AutoCAD feature that makes your callouts easier to move and edit.
For example, the callout box now flips from left to right justification automatically, and the extension line follows the callout wherever you move it. We’ve also built a background mask into our Site callouts, allowing them to stand out from linework and hatches. Don’t want a mask? You can turn it off on individual callouts.

F/X CAD 2017 Set To Release

We’re scheduled to release F/X CAD 2017 on September 30, which means we’ll be dropping support of a few AutoCAD platforms. Land F/X supports the five most recent versions of AutoCAD plus the upcoming version release; as of December 31, 2016, we will no longer support AutoCAD 2011 or 2012. If you have one of these platforms, you’ll need to purchase AutoCAD 2017 or our F/X CAD 2016 to continue using Land F/X.

Have F/X CAD 2015? Upgrading to F/X CAD 2016 now will eliminate the $100 fee for skipping versions. Have F/X CAD 2012, 2013, or 2014? Upgrading to F/X CAD 2016 will still ensure that you get the latest features and improvements in CAD. Either way, it’s a good idea – and a great value.

Need to match a specific angle in your drawing when drawing a line or placing a line of plants, a row of irrigation heads, or any other group of objects? Try using Xhair Angle. While AutoCAD includes a similar command based on typing an angle value, our Xhair Angle tool eliminates the guesswork by allowing for single-click selection. To streamline even further, we've built it into several of our planting, irrigation, and site tools.
In this Power Tip, we'll show you exactly how Xhair Angle can infuse your design process with the efficiency and precision you need.

Make way for F/X CAD 2017

With F/X CAD 2017 making its debut on September 30, Land F/X will be leaving a few AutoCAD platforms behind. Per our policy, Land F/X supports the five most recent versions of AutoCAD, plus the upcoming version release. As a result, we will no longer support AutoCAD 2011 and AutoCAD 2012 as of December 31, 2016.

What to Do Next

AutoCAD 2011 & 2012 Users:

If you have AutoCAD 2011 or 2012, you’ll need purchase AutoCAD 2017 or our F/X CAD 2016 in order to continue using Land F/X.

Please note: AutoCAD 2017 is subscription based, whereas F/X CAD will remain a perpetual license. Subscriptions require users to pay every year just to open the software. Perpetual licenses allow you to upgrade at a later time for a fraction of the yearly cost of a subscription.

F/X CAD Users:

F/X CAD 2015: We recommend upgrading to F/X CAD 2016 now to avoid the $100 fee for skipping versions.

F/X CAD 2012–2014: We recommend upgrading to F/X CAD 2016 to catch up to the recent changes in CAD.

Upgrade Rates:
1 Year Upgrade (2015 to 2016): $250
2 Year Upgrade (2014 to 2016): $600
3 Year Upgrade (2013 to 2016): $850
4 Year Upgrade (2012 to 2016): $995
5 Year Upgrade (2011 to 2016): $1995

What is F/X CAD?

By now, you may have heard about a CAD platform sold by Land F/X. That platform is our F/X CAD. Simply put, F/X CAD is an AutoCAD installation that we scale down and offer as a bundle with one of our Land F/X licenses.

We’ve removed some functionality from conventional AutoCAD, but we’ve limited these removals to features that are not commonly used by landscape architects and irrigation designers. You can find all the information you need on our F/X CAD page

Plant Labels Disappearing?
Quick Trick of the Week

Are your plant labels disappearing each time you run our Verify Labels tool? Chances are, your labels have been copied and pasted between plants, meaning they aren’t actually associated with the plants they appear to be calling out. For the solution, as well as our suggestion for creating variations of your planting plan using the COPY command, follow the link below. And remember: Avoid copying labels from plant to plant.

Paint Mode

Recommended by: Jeff Morosky with WDI

At our very first meeting with Walt Disney Imagineering, the talented Jeff Morosky asked whether there was a way to “paint” a swath of plant symbols into a planting area. With a mix of trigonometry and AutoCAD wizardry, we present ... Paint mode. Just one more way in which Land F/X continues to help you not just make great designs, but have fun doing it!

Inspiration of the Week

"I just started reading the book Unseen City: The Majesty of Pigeons, the Discreet Charm of Snails & Other Wonders of the Urban Wilderness by Nathanael Johnson, and it's riveting. I love the idea of finding meaning, empathy, and beauty in unexpected places."

Inspiration of the Week

Inspired by Forrestt Williams of Land F/X

"Django Reinhardt. Django got his fingers burned quite badly in a fire when he was a teenager. He did not let that stop him from re-learning the guitar with only two dexterous fingers and going on to become one of the most influential guitarists in history. Django inspires me – not just musically (His phrasing is beyond compare with sophistication and personality) – but his determination and tenacity."
