Drip Ring Builder

Setting up drip rings for your irrigation plan previously required you to add a custom drip emitter, add your total flow you wanted to account for, and place the drip ring in your plan with a symbol that represented rings. We've improved the calculation and options of this workflow by creating a Drip Ring Builder.

Drip Ring Builder Overview

To begin building your drip rings, open the Irrigation Manager:

F/X Irrigation ribbon, Irrigation button

or type ProjectIrrigation in the Command line

Select the Drip option in the Irrigation Manager.

Click New, then select the Drip Ring option and click OK.

Step 2: Choose a Drip Ring Source & Set the Design Pressure

Select Manufacturer dialog box

The Select Manufacturer dialog box will open, allowing you to select your drip ring type.

You can now be as flexible as you want by selecting one of the following options:

Custom Option

Selecting the Custom option will immediately bring you to a dialog box (pictured below) where you can set your flow and emitter spacing to the values of your choice, along with your desired design pressure.

Select Manufacturer dialog box, Custom option

Set your desired design pressure and your flow and emitter spacing, then click OK to move on to the drip ring builder.

Generic Option

Selecting the Generic option will give you typical options of the most standard dripline emitter flows and spacing, which you can then select to add to your project.

Select Manufacturer dialog box, Generic option
Select Model dialog box showing generic drip ring options

When adding your generic drip ring to your project, you'll be brought to a dialog box where you can set its design pressure.

After setting the design pressure, click OK to move on to the drip ring builder.

Manufacturer Option

If you select a specific manufacturer for your drip rings, you'll be brought to a dialog box where you can select the product you want to use from that manufacturer.

The emitter flows and spacing will be auto set and fixed for your use.

Click OK to move on to the drip ring builder.

Step 3: Build Your Drip Rings

After setting or accepting the design pressure for your chosen drip ring type, you'll be brought to the builder.

Note that you can also access the builder by using our Edit Equipment tool on a drip ring you've already placed in a plan and clicking the Emitter button.

Equipment Info dialog box, Emitter button

You'll see two options for drip ring styles: Rings and Spiral.

Rings option for drip rings

Using the Rings option will result in your concentric circles all connected via sections of tubing between each ring, as pictured below. More information

Spiral option for drip rings

Using the Spiral option will essentially result in a single length coiled around the tree with each ring at a set spacing, as pictured below. More information

Understanding the Drip Ring Setup Using the Rings Option

Here's what you'll need to configure if you set up your drip rings using the Rings option:

Ring Setup will require three pieces of information:

  • Inner Diameter: Set the smallest inside diameter that is required around the tree or shrub. This diameter is typically somewhere around 2', but project/jurisdiction requirements might indicate differently.
  • Ring Spacing: The distance between rings
  • Ring Count: The total number of rings

Emitter Setup will require 2 pieces of information:

  • Emitter spacing: The inline, on center spacing, for each emitter within the drip tubing
  • Emitter flow: The flow of a single emitter. Remember that we just need a single emitter flow so the system can extrapolate the remaining flows based on the final emitter count that is auto-calculated.

Emitter Setup configuration will only be required if you've chosen the Custom option. Otherwise, these numbers will be filled out automatically.

As you fill in these items, you'll see the values on the right side of the dialog box autofill and adjust based on the values you set on the left side. More information

Understanding the Drip Ring Setup Using the Spiral Option

Here's what you'll need to configure if you set up your drip rings using the Spiral option:

Ring Setup will require three pieces of information:

  • Inner Diameter: Set the smallest inside diameter that is required around the tree or shrub. This diameter is typically somewhere around 2', but project/jurisdiction requirements may indicate differently.
  • Ring Spacing: The distance between rings.
  • Emitter Count: The total number of emitters. Use the slider to get up to 100 emitters or enter any value into the cell as you want.

Emitter Setup will require 2 pieces of information:

  • Emitter spacing: The inline, on center spacing, for each emitter within the drip tubing.
  • Emitter flow: The flow of a single emitter. Remember that we just need a single emitter flow so the system can extrapolate the remaining flows based on the final emitter count that is auto-calculated.

How to replace or adjust the emitter spacing and flows:

To replace or adjust the emitter spacing and lows, use our Edit Equipment tool on the drip ring. Then, depending on which option you've selected:

  • If you've selected the Custom option, click the placed drip ring symbol and adjust flow and spacing.
  • If you've selected the Generic or Manufacturer option, click the Replace button and choose a new item.

Autofilled Values (Right Side of the Dialog Box)

Whether you've chosen the Rings or Spiral option, the following values on the right side of the dialog box will autofill and adjust based on the values you set on the left side:

  • Outside Diameter: Anticipated outside ring position.
  • Wetted Area: Based on the outside diameter plus 12" on either side. This value will display as the coverage arc within the symbol when you place the drip ring in your plan.
  • Total Length: The number of linear feet or meters generated, based on the number of emitters and emitter spacing, plus half the distance of your emitter spacing on either side OR based on the circumference of the outside ring.
  • Total Emitters: Based on total length and emitter spacing.
  • Total Flow: Based on emitter flow and total emitters.
  • Precip Rate: Applies the precip rate formula based on the Wetted Area and Total Flow values set.

Step 4: Select a Symbol for Your Drip Ring

To select a symbol for your drip ring, click the Symbol thumbnail image and set a style of symbol that best represents what you're trying to accomplish.

Equipment Info dialog box, Symbol thumbnail image

Don't see a symbol you want to represent your spiral or ring setup? You're welcome to add your own symbols for the system to display. We're also in the process of creating additional symbol options.

Step 5: Place & Pipe Drip Rings

Once you've added your drip ring to the Irrigation Manager, use our Place Drip Emitters instructions to place it in your design, then pipe it together with lateral pipe as you would any other piece of equipment.
