Export Layer Settings from the Layer Properties Manager to a Text Reader Application (Such as Notepad) for Review

Issue

You need to review and mark up all the layer settings in a particular drawing for changes.

The following steps will prove especially helpful for reviewing layer information because:

  • Layer files (LAY or .lay files) can’t be easily opened in text reader applications such as Notepad easily, and
  • Screenshots take a long time to create and print out – especially for long layer lists

Solution

You can review your layer settings by creating a text file of your layer list and all settings. Here's how.

1. Type LOGFILEON in the Command line, and press Enter.

2. Type -LA to invoke the LAYER command.

3. Type ? to select which layers to list.

4. Type * to display all layer names in the text screen and to also create a log file.

5. The AutoCAD Text Window of the Command line history should now open. Here, you'll see the full layer list and settings. Highlight the full layer list, and press CTRL+C to copy it.

6. Type LOGFILEOFF at the command prompt.

7. Open a blank file in a text reader, such as Notepad. Press CTRL+V to paste what you copied.

8. Print the file from the text reader.
