When laying out a site I would like to use a series of northings and eastings points then start a new sequence for other layout items. This is a feature in Civil 3D that would be very helpful in Land/FX.

For example,
Place N/E points 1-37 then start a new series of points starting over at 100 (then place N/E points 100-143).

When you go to place your schedule you would have the option to generate a schedule with both series or generate separate schedules for each list. Furthermore, if you need to add another point to the first series you can continue your numbering by placing point 38, instead of jumping to the end of your numbering.
Ben,

Yes this came up in another forum post on here recently, but I couldn't find it right away.
Anyway, the idea was that perhaps we can assign a numeric range through our Work Area feature, if not just an overall override. So that is on the wishlist.
Cheers,

Look forward to this feature, thanks Jeremiah.
That's exactly how we want to start using this too, by different series numbers per Work Area. This way we won't conflict with any other horizontal control and it's a clear distinction of areas based on the point numbers.

Hello again folks,

I just wanted to check in on the progress of this wish list item, I run into this issue on about half my projects and would love to have this option in the near feature. I'm not if linking the N&E series to work areas will fix all the issues I run into because of how work areas function currently.

Let me provide a somewhat simplified example.

I use one series of N&E points for my site layout (paving corners, paving arc points, building corners, etc) (points 1-18 in Figure A-1). I then skip to a larger number (a new series) for locating playground footings (points 30-39) in the event that I need to add more site layout points. Because my playground layout is on a different sheet, I need to be able to freeze the site layout points (1-18) in my playground layout viewport and vice versa. Sometimes site plans change a little and being able to add a few points to a series without having to jump past a bunch of numbers that were used in another series on a different sheet would be really nice and help with clarity. See Figure A-2 for an example of how I think the series could function.

While Work Areas would fix the series problem, they cause another problem, see below. (in this next example I am using trees to represent Northings and Eastings since Work Areas do not currently apply to N&E)

As they work currently, Work Areas can overlap but don't seem to exclude any items within their area.  In Figure B-1 I want my "Site Layout" Work Area to only register points 1-9 (White Oaks/ series A) I also want my "Playground Layout" Work Area to only register points 20-23 (Loblolly Pines/ series B). As it is now, Work Areas will count all items within their area. If work areas are to be used for N&E you would need to be able to select which series you want to be counted by the Work Area. As shown in Figure B-2 it would be nice to apply a work area to a specific series rather than indiscriminately including all points within the work area.

To sum up, here are the features that I believe are needed to solve these issues:

1. Create a group/series option for N&E (which allows for isolating each series and doesn't require me to place the intermediate points out of view)

2. If Work Areas are used, allow them to be exclusive to a single group/series of N&E points (for generation of exclusive point schedules without overlap)

I hope that was clear enough, there's a lot of nuance to this topic and I may not have considered the best solution. Let me know if I need to further clarify any of my points or if I'm misunderstanding how the software works currently.

Keep up the great work, Thanks!

Ben,

I really appreciate the thought and effort you put into this.  It definitely helps us come up with the best solution.

In looking at these and thinking about it, I'm starting to think that the best way to do this is actually via the Grading Manager.  There, the points could simply be organized by Series.  And that way, you would have total control to create a new series, and place it anywhere you wish, to have it always be a part of that Series.

This all assumes a revised Grading Manager that is a docked palette, making this all much easier.

Thanks again for the ideas!

Thanks for the quick response Jeremiah,

I tend to agree with you on integrating it into the grading manager. One additional idea is to have the grading manager create a unique layer for each series (LK-ANNO-NE-A, LK-ANNO-NE-B, etc) so that the series can be isolated (VP frozen) as needed. I realize this would be rather difficult since the N&E spots are a standard block, but i think the functionality of multiple series demands that each series can be isolated. I'll leave that challenge in y'alls capable hands.

Thanks!

Hello Land F/X team,

I'm just making my yearly check in on this feature request, any updates on this possibly becoming a feature in the software? :)

Ben,

This is still lumped in with moving the Grading Manager to a docked palette.  In this last year we moved the Lighting Manager to a docked palette, along with some pretty extensive changes.  Later this year we will be porting Schematic Irrigation to a docked palette with a bunch of new capability.  And on the calendar for next year is Grading Manager.  Might be able to get to it sooner, with all of our trade shows cancelled.

Thanks for checking it, it helps make sure nothing falls through the cracks!

Howdy,
I just wanted to make my periodic check-in on this feature, has any progress been made towards creating series options for Northings and Eastings? The Grading Manager seems to be a docked palette now, but I still don't see a way to create series as described in this thread (maybe there is and I missed it).
Thanks!
Hi Ben, not yet. There has been progress with discussions on it, though.

I would also like this feature. And the ability to insert a new point in sequence. and all the other points update accordingly.
