it would be nice to be able to give categories to the lines nodes and symbols in concept graphics and then be able to show only that category on an exhibit and ultimately only certain categories on the legend so you could do multiple maps and exhibits and only show what you need to show on a sheet by sheet or viewport by viewport basis

Well first, 50 or so layouts is just not a good solution. So let's throw that out the window.
And in Modelspace.... what the heck is going on in there???

Anyway, let's start with a better sheet setup, with the plan file xref'ed into 50 or so sheet files. (And that title block thing from modelspace belongs in a sheet template)
This will give you the added bonus of easily being able to have other linework greyscaled, popping just what you want in color.

As for the primary mechanism to do this, each Concept Line is a single block, and can easily be moved after the fact to a different layer. Even for the ones that you have to explode, the sub-blocks are unique and can be easily selected with a Select Similar. So in this manner you can easily Freeze alternate layers as necessary.

I think there's still a valid case for being able to assign unique layers to each Concept Line, but this is great example that it's still not that many objects to move manually.

You bet.
We'd love to see an example that complex! Please send it over so we can use it as a test to work on the feature.

the way I am thinking right now is to do each layout and then move the concept graphics from model space to paper space and go on to the next sheet. then create legends on each sheet and explode and arrange the nodes and lines as needed per sheet I would love some ideas of how to keep as much of the smart technology intact without exploding things.

the 50 layouts are something that never go cleaned up from a previous exercise, we have just an 11"x17" and a 8.5"x11" layout that are href'd into the tabs in paper space so that is not an issue (although we do need to clean out the excess). one thing i am noticing is that if you don't select "done" at the end of the line then in does not create a block out of it and you have multiple segments. I can put each line (block) on a separate layer and freeze those I do not need so that works, however I still am not seeing a way to generate a legend that includes only those lines and nodes show. lastly what about adding a "area" to the concept graphics? i know you can do it with ref notes or site development but i could see the need for just a simple area where you select the color and hatch and it could be updated in the legend so you could have open space, private space, and then still place nodes for recreation amenities.

thanks
Bob
The Concept Graphics schedule will automatically ignore items on a frozen layer.
But that leaves you with having to toggle a layer state, switch to the layout desired, and generate that schedule, shampoo, rinse, repeat.
I still think it makes more sense to separate them to different drawings, so that you can easily halftone the other linework.

Regarding the Areas, that is definitely a nice thought to integrate into the Concept Graphics -- but note that we have already done the opposite -- in the Zoning manager, you can access Concept Lines and Nodes, as well as Areas such as Open Space and Private Space, all in one schedule.
