Recently, the plant tags in our office have changed to a shaded square shape when oriented to the left. Please see attached. Is there a setting to fix this?
I assume this is not drawing specific, since you said this is happening around the office. If so, your right label style looks like it's either customized, or one of our old label blocks. You can fix this issue by making sure that you download the latest plant label blocks. Here's how: Updated Plant Label Styles.

You can then customize the new label to remove the grey backdrop. Here's a recent power tip video with more instruction on how customize a label: Power Tip: Customizing Plant Labels.

If it is drawing specific (meaning you open a blank drawing from the acad.dwt template and labelling behaves properly), then you have a rogue left label definition stuck in your drawing. Purge out that label definition and try labelling again. You can purge it out by briefly changing to any other label definition in the plant preferences, typing PRG, then changing the label back to the proper label style.
