I use notation callouts often for exhibits having to do with signage or fencing, etc, and they can get pretty hard to read when everything is just a number notation. I would appreciate it if there would be a way to change the screen fill colors behind the numbers for easier identification.

Vasilisa, at this time that's not possible automatically, I'll note the request.
You can block edit the refnote callout inside the mleader and change the mask to be a true color. That will achieve what you want, and the same block in the schedule would also reflect the same color. This would be on a project-by-project basis.
