Dear Land F/X Family


Would like to ask how is the best way to present irrigation systems(mainline,bubbler, drip, spray) separately on sheets.

I used to do the design all in one xref then do separate the layers as required to be presented in the sheets to the keep connection of the whole system working.
It works but takes time to separate the layers.

Any idea will be appreciated..


Is this available easily in Land F/x and am still missing it.
If, Not Can it be a feature request?

Currently, the only similar feature that is fully automated would be to generate a Valve Schedule with the Colorize Zones option.

The creation of the Mainline plan is the easiest to do manually. Although we do have something we could easily add. Currently the Draw Mainline tool has a T keyboard option to Toggle layers. We could add to the Draw Mainline tool an ability to tap T to toggle off all non-mainline layers, and then immediately press Esc to leave them that way.

The challenge is in creating the other plans, particularly without first having created several classes of redundant lateral pipe, so that each type’s pipe is on a different layer.

One novel tool we have is through Work Areas. If you draw work areas around each type of irrigated area, you could use the Make Viewport tool to create clipped viewports from each work area.

In terms of considering a future tool, let’s first go through what is impossible:
- we can’t alter layers through the xref
- we can’t know if the user considers Rotary sprinklers as Spray, or if Turf and Shrub Spray are to be considered the same or different
- I can also imagine a user would just like to separate all the Non-Pottable irrigation, meaning this will need a dialog box with multiple options
- highlighting things is going to be the easiest, changing layers would be incredibly challenging and time consuming, as it would need to alter every single irrigation item in the entire plan

It also is worth stating, this is a perfect use case for Schematic Irrigation, again bringing to the forefront that it should be used on every plan. We keep getting asked if there’s a way to generate a breakdown of irrigated areas after the fact, and just like this request, if Schematic Irrigation was utilized from the start, it would already be done.

If you could me know a bit more what might work for you, and how you expect it to operate, we can experiment with it.

What I usually do is the following:
1- For tertiary network I use different lateral classes :
trees laterals
drip lateras
sprinkler laterals

in term of layering the lateral pipes , they are already on separate layers

2- For valves also I tend to add more than one valve
tree valve
drip valve
sprinkler valve
The valves are on the same layer
What I do is that i choose foe example a drip valve of specific size and select similar then add them to a new layer similar name of the original layer but specifying it as for drip.
i repeat this for all other drip available sizes
and the same is repeated for other valve types(tree/sprinkler)

3- For other irrigation equip that usually located on the LI-EQPM and lateral pipe sizes I do the same as necessary.
4- I freeze the layers as required in the sheets, but my XREF still has the mainline and ail irrigation system in one file.


Can we make the pipe sizes follow the lateral class used(basically adding new layers for pipe sizes)?
Can we make the different valves added in the irrigation manager to be assigned with different layers(also possibility of adding new layers)?
can we also for example add layer assigned to the auxiliary equipment in the irrigation manager?

Thank you for that clarification, that gives me some ideas.

Luckily, one of your requests is already enabled - in the Irrigation Preferences, is the option for "Pipe callout layer per class" to do exactly as you ask with the pipe label layers.

For the valves, it would seem the simplest solution would be to simply create some additional valve blocks. Then instead of having their linework on layer 0 to have them colored by size, they could be on a specific layer to allows easier freezing - for instance LK-IRRG-VALV-DRIP, which would allow controlling with a layer filter for "-DRIP" which would also grab all drip equipment.

Regarding the Auxiliary Equipment, which is usually placed on LI-EQPM, can you explain more of what layers you would customize there? Primarily, I'd like to know if we can get away with a preference option like the one for the pipe labels, or if we need to add an entire interface to allow setting a custom layer to every equipment type.

This might be more than you're looking to do, but I usually just draw everything I need in one "master" layout so I know it will all work off the same POC and mainline system, and then xcopy the whole thing as many times as I need, work area the copies, and delete the things I don't need out of each work area.

Works great when I need to split materials for areas or things that aren't physically separated enough for the work area tool to be useful (like tree bubblers that wind their way across the site, for example).

Screwing with the layers usually seems like too much of a hassle for me.
