Mainline Pipe

It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your potential mainline pipe sizing when thinking about the maximum flows through your system.

The maximum allowable flows through various sizes of PVC mainline pipe listed below are based on the velocity of 5 fps (1.5 m/s), with slightly slower velocity options for the larger pipe sizes.

PVC Sch 40 and Class 315
Size In. GPM @ FPS
3/4” 8.33 @ 5
1” 13.5 @ 5
1 1/4” 24.0 @ 5
1 1/2” 32.0 @ 5
2” 50 @ 5
2 1/2” 73 @ 5
3” 105 @ 4.6 110 @ 5
4” 160 @ 4.4 180 @ 5
6” 332 @ 4.25 385 @ 5
PVC Sch 40 and Class 315
Size MM L/Min. @ M/S
20mm 31.5 @ 1.52
25mm 51 @ 1.52
32mm 91 @ 1.52
40mm 121 @ 1.52
50mm 189 @ 1.52
63mm 246 @ 1.52
76mm 397 @ 1.40 416 @ 1.52
100mm 606 @ 1.34 680 @ 1.52
150mm 1,257 @ 1.29 1,457 @ 1.52

The diagram to the right illustrates several crucial components of an irrigation system design, including mainline pipe. These components are available in our equipment database, allowing you to spec them and use them in your irrigation plans while designing a system using AutoCAD. Click the image to see an enlarged version.
