Activating F/X CAD: How Many Users and Computers for Each F/X CAD License (Seat)?

Question

You've purchased, or are thinking of purchasing, one or more licenses of F/X CAD, and you're wondering how many people can use each license, as well as on how many computers each user can install a license.

Answer

Autodesk has stepped up its enforcement of the policy that one license of F/X CAD is only to be installed on one person's work computer and home computer or laptop, and only one of these installations may be used at a time by that person. When a purchase happens for F/X CAD, whether it is an upgrade or first-time purchase, 1 license = 1 serial number = 2 installations (home or laptop) per user.

What is allowed

The following is an example of a typical allowed usage of F/X CAD seats.

In this example, a design firm has purchased the three F/X CAD seats with the following serial numbers:

  • Serial number 123-11111111 (worth 1 seat)
  • Serial number 123-22222222 (worth 1 seat)
  • Serial number 123-33333333 (worth 1 seat)

Let's say this office has three F/X CAD users: Bob, Steve, and Judy. Here's what's allowable in terms of these three users installing their F/X CAD licenses:

  • Bob installs serial number 123-11111111 on a work computer and home computer (desktop or laptop).
  • Steve installs serial number 123-22222222 on a work computer and home computer (desktop or laptop).
  • Judy installs serial number 123-33333333 on a work computer and home computer (desktop or laptop).

What is not allowed

We allow two activations per seat only for users who need to work both at home and in the office. Users cannot exceed the allowable number of installations or they will be out of compliance. If an office purchases three seats, only three people can use them. For example, the following would absolutely not be within policy:

  • Bob installs serial number 123-12345678 on a work computer and home computer (desktop or laptop).
  • Steve installs serial number 123-12345678 on a work computer and home computer (desktop or laptop).
  • Judy installs serial number 123-12345678 on a work computer.
  • Daniel installs serial number 123-12345678 on a work computer.

The following is also NOT allowed:

  • Bob installs serial number 123-12345678 on a work computer and home computer (desktop or laptop).
  • Steve installs serial number 123-12345678 on a work computer and home computer (desktop or laptop).
  • Judy installs serial number 123-12345678 on a work computer.
  • Daniel installs serial number 123-12345678 on a home computer (desktop or laptop).

From the Autodesk Licenses and Services Agreement, Exhibit B:

The following excerpt from Autodesk's Licenses and Services Agreement lays out the Autodesk policy on F/X CAD license type and licensee definition:

License Types

Stand-alone (Individual) or Single-user License. If the License Identification identifies the License Type as "Stand-alone", "Individual" or "Single-user", then Licensee may Install a single primary copy of the specific release of the Licensed Materials designated in the applicable License Identification on one (1) Computer, on a Stand-alone Basis, and permit Access to such primary copy of the Licensed Materials solely by Licensee’s Personnel, and solely for Licensee’s Internal Business Needs. Licensee may also Install a single additional copy of such Licensed Materials on one (1) additional Computer, on a Stand-alone Basis; provided that (i) such additional copy of the Licensed Materials is Accessed solely by the same person as the primary copy; (ii) such person is Licensee (if Licensee is an individual) or an employee of Licensee; (iii) such person Accesses the additional copy solely to perform work while away from that person’s usual work location and solely for Licensee’s Internal Business Needs; and (iv) the primary and additional copies are not Accessed at the same time. Stand-alone (Individual) or Single-user License is for a perpetual term, except as otherwise provided in this Agreement.

Definitions

"Licensee" means (a) the company or other legal entity on behalf of which Autodesk Materials are acquired, if the Autodesk Materials are acquired on behalf of such an entity (e.g., by an employee, independent contractor, or other authorized representative), or (b) if there is no such entity, the individual who accepts this Agreement (e.g., by selecting the "I accept" button or other button or mechanism associated with this Agreement or otherwise indicating assent to this Agreement, or by installing, downloading, accessing, or otherwise copying or using all or any portion of the Autodesk Materials). For clarification, "Licensee" refers only to a single, specifically identified legal entity or individual, and does not include any subsidiary or affiliate of any such legal entity or individual or any other related person.
